At some point or another, there is a good chance you’ve come across someone making
a very big mistake in the gym. Whether the mistake is related to workout program
planning, gym etiquette, or lack of knowledge with the gym equipment itself, mistakes
are quite common.
Going To Long On the Cardio Equipment
The first big mistake that people frequently make with their gym workouts is going too long on the cardio equipment. Keep in mind here that many gyms have rules in place that only allow you to be on the cardio equipment for about 20 minutes at a time (some allow up to 30 minutes), so you need to be considerate of other patrons and get off after this time if someone is waiting. As such, it’s important to make the most of the cardio time you do have available, so opt to do sprints rather than moderate pace which will give you more bang per minute.
Not Wiping Down Your Equipment
Another big mistake that some people make is not wiping down the equipment after
they use it. Since you likely would not want to be working out where someone else was
sweating heavily, give the same consideration to those around you.
Hogging Weight Machines
Another big issue, along the same lines as the cardio machine issue, are those people
who choose to hog the weight machines. Once you’re done your set, make sure you
remove yourself off the weight machine, not sit in place while you recover.
By doing so, you allow someone else to sneak in a set between yours. It’s highly
frustrating when you want a machine and someone is just sitting in it, so don’t be that person.
Not Putting Free Weights Back
Since you want to be able to find the given weight you need to use easily while going about your workout, it’s important that people are putting free weights back on the rack. If you’re using the fifteen pounders, be sure you place them back where the fifteen pounders typically go. This will make things easier for everyone.
Not Asking For A Spotter When You Need It
Next up, be sure you do ask for a spotter when you need it. A big gym mistake some
people make is trying to lift much more weight than they are physically capable of doing, which only leads to them experiencing a major injury.
Instead, ask for help when you need it. That’s the smartest way to make sure you get
an effective workout in while staying safe.
Dropping Weights
Ever been in the gym when you’ve heard weights crashing down? If so, you can
understand this gym mistake very easily. Whenever you’re finished with your set, be
sure you place the weights down gently. There is no reason to allow barbells or dumbbells to drop down to the floor as not only does it abuse the gym, but it’s disrupting to others who are trying to remain focused on their workouts.
Leaving Exercise Balls Around
Another big thing you want to watch is that you aren’t leaving exercise balls around. This is very common; you will take an exercise ball over to the stretching mat to work your abs on and there it will sit. Always put them back. It gets fairly annoying having exercise balls rolling around all over the gym so do your part to ensure this doesn’t happen.
Becoming Chatty Cathy While Others Are Trying to Workout
If you’re serious about your workout, you do not want to run across someone who is
trying to strike up a twenty minute long conversation at the gym. You have these
people though – those that are using the gym more to socialize than anything else.
They make it very hard to stay focused and get in everything you had hoped in your
allotted time period. Make sure that if you see someone who looks like they are working hard and focused, you give the respect of not interrupting them. Save the chit-chat for when you’re out of the gym or stretching afterwards.
Leaning On The Cardio Equipment
Ever seen someone leaning so hard on the stepper handles that you’d be surprised if
their legs were even working? This is a huge mistake that’s made time and time again.
If you’re using the cardio equipment, make sure you use it as it’s meant to be used – no cheating. If you are leaning on the equipment, you’re going to take practically all the stress off the working muscles, not getting nearly the same results you’re going for.
Not Giving Personal Trainer’s Priority
Finally, you want to be sure you are always giving the personal trainer’s in the gym
priority. If they want to work in for a set, you need to allow them to do so. Since the person with them is paying for the minute, it’s important they can maximize their
sessions. While no personal trainer should ever kick you off of a piece of equipment if you’re in the middle of a set, they do take priority once the last person has finished. So, keep these gym mistakes in mind. Abiding by them will help ensure that your gym remains a desirable pace to workout and everyone’s happy.
